Working with Apogee Prepress 7 for the past year has been great! The staff favorite is the Imposition feature, which once learned, has proven to be consistent and reliable as well as quick and efficient. Our old workflow of multiple templates with numerous names and all the confusion that can create has been left behind. We hear version 7.1 is soon to be in our future and we are excited to see what capabilities that will bring us.

The Epson 7900 has been in our use for about 1 year now and we find it a great addition to our business. It is easy to use, from preparing and sending files to changing paper. Keeping it calibrated is also simplified with the attached Spectro Proofer. The 7900 consistently produces high quality prints on various paper types including canvas. It has also allowed us to provide poster size prints, up to 24" wide, and fine art reproductions to our customers. It's nice to have equipment that simply works the way you need it to.

Know the color space of your images.

If you are going to use that photograph of Pikes Peak in your next newsletter, check to see what color space it is in. Images from digital cameras tend to be in RGB and scanned images are in whatever the scanner was set to. This can be a problem when printing in CMYK.
In Photoshop you can check under Image-Mode, if your version of Photoshop does not already display the color space in the title bar. There you can change the color space to CMYK and see if that blue sky stays that blue. This will give you a better idea of what it will look like off the press and you won't be surprised by any unexpected color shifts. If you don't have Photoshop or you don't like the shift in color, contact us and we will be glad to assist you.

In our continual effort to provide our customers with the best, we have recently updated our software to the latest in prepress technology. We now use Agfa Prepress 7 as our platform to output plates, proofs, and in some cases, film. We have been working with Agfa's software since 2003 and the latest version of the software now includes imposition capabilities. It is called Apogee Impose, and with it we can setup customer's pages on the plate in a quick and accurate manner, without leaving the Prepress program. As technology advances we strive to utilize it.

Here at Service Typographers, we sometimes get Indesign files that have missing fonts or missing linked images. This means we have to call our customer and let them know we can not proceed with the job until we get those missing items. This can lead to delays if the designer is on vacation or is otherwise out of contact.
In order to make sure you send us everything we need to output the file, go ahead and have Indesign package everything in one nice neat folder that can be zipped or stuffed and sent to us.
In Indesign go to File/Package. This will bring up a window with a summary of everything used in your file. Here you can review what is in your file. Choose the Package button to continue. This next window gives you the opportunity to include any instructions with the file. Choose the Continue button when ready. This window lets you give the file a name and destination. Make sure the following boxes are checked- Copy Fonts, Copy Linked Graphics, Update Graphic Links In Package. Then choose the Package button, the file is saved with the name you gave it, in the place you saved it, and you are now ready to zip/stuff it and send it to us.
